Funny, warm, historical, mysterious, literary and timely, these words come to mind when thinking about “The Vixen” by Francine Prose.

The novel’s narrator is an insecure Harvard graduate named Simon Putnam, an only child living back home with his parents on Coney Island in the 1950s.  He ends up in the publishing business, assigned to work along an inept author with a complex history, none of which is literary.

“The Vixen” is a coming-of-age novel. Prose’s novel is a well-written, complex work that resonates with the protests and complications of today.  I loved “The Vixen”!
